about

A poem by AJ Gault (1818-1903), arranged and sung by Dave Heumann

lyrics

Twenty Years Ago (AJ Gault)

I've wandered to the village, Tom; I've sat beneath the tree
Upon the schoolhouse playing ground that sheltered you and me
but few were left to greet me, Tom, and none were left to know
Who played with us upon the green, just twenty years ago

I passed along the river, Tom where weeping willows grew
And sat beneath their shadows cool and we did, I and you
And gazed upon the sparkling stream where oft we used to go
To catch the chub and speckled trout just twenty years ago

The grass was just as green then Tom, bare-footed boys at play
Were sporting just as we had been, with spirits just as gay
The master sleeps upon the hill, which coated o'er with snow
afforded us a sliding place some twenty years ago

The old schoolhouse is altered some, the benches are replaced
by new ones, very like the same our jack-knives had defaced
The same clapboards are on the wall, the bell swings to and fro
It's music just the same, dear Tom, 'twas twenty years ago

The spring that bubbled neath the hill, close by the spreading beech
Is very low; 'twas once so high that we could hardly reach
And kneeling down to take a drink, dear Tom I started so
To see how very much I've changed since twenty years ago

Near by that spring upon a beech, you know I cut your name
Your sweetheart just beneath it Tom, and you did mine the same
Some heartless wretch had girdled it, 'twas dying sure but slow
Just like the one whose name you cut some twenty years ago

My lids have long been dry, Tom, but tears come to my eyes
I think of her I loved so well- those early broken ties
I visited the old churchyard, and took some flowers to strow
Upon the graves of those we loved just twenty years ago

Some are in the churchyard laid, some sleep beneath the sea
And none are left of our old class, excepting you and me
And when our time shall come, Tom, and we are called to go
O may we meet with those we loved just twenty years ago

Arbouretum has been called the best of the millennial classic rock bands. The band, founded by guitarist and vocalist Dave Heumann, effortlessly weaves its melodies & guitar solos with the often hypnotic rhythms of bassist Corey Allender & drummer Brian Carey around the deliberate keyboard of Matthew Pierce to lift the vocals. The result is a full sound delivered with a striking sense of intimacy. ... more
